Travelling the world is an incredible experience filled with new cultures, breathtaking sights, and unforgettable adventures. One of the best parts of exploring a new country is meeting friendly locals who offer a warm welcome, share their traditions, and make you feel at home.
However, not every destination provides that same sense of hospitality. Some places can feel cold, indifferent, or even outright unwelcoming to visitors. Popular travel YouTuber Wolters World has visited dozens of countries and, while he believes there are friendly people everywhere, he has encountered a few places he claims where warmth and hospitality were noticeably lacking. Based on his experiences, he has compiled a list of the five least friendly countries he has visited, destinations where interactions with locals left something to be desired.
1. Belgium
Despite its world-class beer, stunning cities like Bruges and Ghent, and rich cultural heritage, Belgium was Wolters World’s first pick for unfriendliness.
He specifically called out Brussels, citing an overall cold attitude from locals. Additionally, he recounted incidents of racial harassment toward students he was travelling with, making the country feel less welcoming than others in Europe.
2. China
While interactions in small groups were generally positive, Wolters World described chaotic and unfriendly experiences in larger crowds. He noted aggressive behaviour in public spaces, such as pushing to get ahead in lines and people fighting over items in stores.
The overwhelming population density seemed to contribute to an “every person for themselves” attitude, making hospitality take a back seat.
3. Denmark
Rather than outright hostility, Denmark made the list for what Wolters World described as a “cold indifference.” Locals, he explained, simply don’t see tourists as part of their lives and therefore don’t engage with them.
He even recounted a Danish man agreeing with his assessment, as he said: “It’s not that I don’t like you. I just don’t care.” While Danes can be friendly in social settings, everyday interactions can feel distant.
4. Argentina
The YouTuber specifically called out Buenos Aires, where he found an air of superiority among locals compared to the rest of the country.
He noted a social divide between residents of the capital and those from the provinces, leading to a less-than-warm reception for outsiders. Despite enjoying his time there, he observed a clear difference in attitude within the city.
5. Luxembourg
Topping his list of least friendly places was Luxembourg. With high salaries, a comfortable lifestyle, and little reliance on tourism, locals seemed uninterested in engaging with visitors.
He described an atmosphere where service workers and residents gave off an attitude of, “You should be grateful to be here.” While the country is rich and well-organized, the hospitality left much to be desired.
Despite his rankings, Wolters World stressed that each country still has plenty to offer and that not everyone there is unfriendly. He encouraged travelers to keep an open mind and shared that he has also compiled a much longer list of the most friendly countries he’s visited.
