At least three Palestinian women were killed after an Iranian « cluster-style » rocket missed Israel and exploded over the West Bank. The women were all using a beauty salon next to a home in the Palestinian town of Beit Awwa, south of Hebron, in the West Bank, when the deadly missile struck last night.
The victims are thought to be the first Palestinians killed during the most recent war between Israel and the US and Iran. A statement from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said three women had been killed and 13 others were in a critical condition following the blast.
A communication from the charity said: « The Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s ambulance crews responded to a direct missile strike in Hebron, in the Hebron Governorate, following a tragic incident in a salon.
« Five ambulances were dispatched to the scene. The number of victims and injured was determined as three deaths and eight suffering critical injuries in the field. One case was transferred to Dura Governmental Hospital and underwent cardiac resuscitation. She was transferred to Al-Ahli Hospital. Her hand and shoulder were injured. »
The Palestinian official news agency (WAFA) reported that fragments from the Iranian missile fell on a beauty salon. According to WAFA the Palestine Civil Defence reported that the missile parts fell on a caravan being used next to a salon built onto a house.
Israeli news site Ynetnews reports the Iranian rocket was fired towards southern Israel around 10pm last night (Wednesday) and air raid sirens in the local area.
The Palestinian Authority condemned the strike by Iran as “brutal aggression » that « threatens the security and stability of the region ».
However, the terrorist group Hamas, which still controls large swathes of Palestinian territory has not condemned Iran.
Iran intensified its attacks on oil and gas facilities around the Gulf and on Israel overnight, dramatically raising the stakes in a war that is sending shock waves through the global economy.
The strikes, in retaliation for an Israeli attack on a key Iranian gas field, sent fuel prices soaring and risked drawing Iran’s Arab neighbours directly into the conflict. Tehran’s targeting of energy production further stressed global supply already under pressure because of Iran’s stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported.
Underscoring the danger to ships in the region, a vessel was set ablaze off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and another damaged off Qatar. But efforts to bypass the strait were also under pressure as an Iranian drone hit a Saudi refinery on the Red Sea, which the country had been hoping to use as an alternative exit route.
