Iran has issued a chilling warning after its South Pars gas field was blown up – just as Donald Trump made an incredible admission about the major incident in Middle East conflict.
A joint spokesman for Iran’s general staff said Israel’s attack was a « grave mistake ». He warned: « The next attacks on your energy infrastructure and that of your allies will not stop until complete destruction. Our response will be much harsher than last night’s attacks. » The comments were made in reference to Iran striking a key energy facility in neighbouring Qatar on Wednesday. Officials in Qatar confirmed on Thursday that Iranian missiles had hit Ras Laffan – the country’s main gas hub – causing what they described as « significant damage. » Iran is also reported to have targeted sites in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait with UAE authorities dealing with incidents at Habshan gas facility and Bab oilfield. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said the United States « knew nothing about this particular attack », in relation to the South Pars strike, and insisted the country was not involved.
Speaking on his platform, Trump said: « Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small section of the whole has been hit. »
« The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen. »
Trump went on to claim Iran was unaware the United States had no involvement and that Iran then « unjustifiably and unfairly » carried out a strike on part of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas infrastructure.
He went on to make a strong statement that Israel would not launch further strikes on the vital gas facility – unless Iran escalated the conflict.
« No more attacks will be made by Israel, » he wrote in capslock, before going on to emphasise extremely importance and value of South Pars Field – the world’s largest gas field.
« Unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar, » he added. « In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before. »
Trump insisted he did not want to approve this « level of violence and destruction » due to its lasting impact on Iran, but issued a stark warning that he would move decisively if there were further attacks on Qatar’s Liquefied Natural Gas.
Gas prices surged after the strike on Qatar’s Ras Laffan complex. In early trading, wholesale prices in the UK and Europe jumped by more than 25% before later falling back slightly.
European gas prices are now more than twice as high as they were before the conflict began.
The strike was widely viewed as a significant escalation in the conflict.
While Israel had previously targeted several Iranian fuel depots, it had, until Wednesday, stopped short of hitting oil and natural gas production sites.
