Iran US ceasefire: Mojtaba Khamenei issues ‘not the end of war’ update | World | News

Mojtaba Khamenei has released a statement following the announced ceasefire between the US and Iran. On Wednesday Iran’s supreme leader instructed the Islamic Republic’s military to observe the ceasefire, while strongly declaring that « this is not the end of the war. »

In a statement released through Iranian state TV, Ali Khamenei’s son and successor said: « This is not the end of the war, but all military units must obey orders and uphold the ceasefire. » Khamenei has not been seen publicly since being appointed to replace his father who was killed in the initial US-Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28. Iran’s supreme national security council confirmed a two-week ceasefire, however despite agreeing to hault hostilities Tehran made it clear the ceasefire does not mark an end to the conflict. Khamenei’s order came after Donald Trump‘s stark warning Iran’s civilisation will « die tonight » if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened.

The ceasefire came just 90 minutes before the US President’s 8pm deadline, declaring it a « big day for world peace. »

Iran has listed its own conditions as part of a 10-point ceasefire plan.

This include lifting all sanctions, the release of Iranian funds and frozen by the US and full compensation for reconstruction.

The proposal also calls for a complete end to hostilities in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen, alongside free navigaition in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran says that if these conditions are met and will not pursue nuclear weapons, ceasefire across all fronts would take effect immediately upon agreement.

Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen publicly since being appointed.

It was previously reported that the new leader had been flown to Moscow for leg surgery which was « personally offered by Putin » after he was left seriously injured in airstrikes.

Khamenei is reportedly being treated for a « severe » medical condition, according to a new intelligence assessment, and is undergoing treatment at a secure site in Qom.

The report led by US and Israeli intelligence claimed the new leader is unconscious and added he is « unable to be involved in any decision making ».

Just a fortnight ago, said he was unsure Khamenei was even alive.

Speaking to NBC at the time, the US president said: « I don’t know if he’s even alive. So far, nobody’s been able to show him. I’m hearing he’s not alive, and if he is, he should do something very smart for his country, and that’s surrender. »
