‘I’m a fireman – phone charging mistake could lead to bad consequences’

Have you ever thought about the dangers of charging your mobile phone overnight while you sleep?

A concerned fireman has taken to TikTok with a life-saving plea, advising people against this common habit due to its potential threat to safety. David from Kent Fire and Rescue Service insists that charging electrical devices should be done when you are present and awake.

« You can’t smell anything when you’re asleep, » he starkly points out. « So if it starts to burn, the fire won’t wake you up. »

David emphasises the alarming fact that it takes merely three breaths of smoke to render a person unconscious. Furthermore, he cautions: « Lots of people have cheap and faulty phone chargers, but even genuine and new ones have been known to start fires. »

He notes that often the charger lead, not the battery, is the dangerous element, before concluding his guidance: « If you’re able to, we advise you to charge your phone when you’re there and when you’re awake – from a fire service point of view, it’s much safer. »

One TikTok user, acknowledging the importance of such information, commented: « This is good advice to be honest. My daughter’s phone charger caught fire the night, luckily it made a loud bang which woke her. »

Another recounted a harrowing experience, saying: « I unplug mine now, even it’s only charged to 50%, because one night I heard my phone buzz and reached to pick it up and the charger was smoking and sparked, wire was burnt black – wake up call for me. »

A third expressed alarm, saying: « Oh blimey there’s three phones charging in my bedroom, grandson’s not allowed them at bedtime cos they play on them. »

A fourth shared their cautious approach: « Yep I don’t charge my phone overnight, never have, it’s always charged before I sleep. Just like I don’t leave the house with anything on charge or a tumble dryer on. »

Meanwhile, a fifth person commended David’s advice: « I see loads of videos on here telling you to do different things, but in the last few months this one has been the best information video anyone’s made with with everyone would be like this one. »

Some commenters countered that it’s not feasible to avoid nocturnal phone charging, however, with one stating, « I don’t have time to charge my phone while I’m awake, I’ve been charging my phone over night the whole time I’ve ever had one, also it’s my life I’ll risk it if I want. »
