For those seeking a peaceful, sunny European retreat, few places offer more serenity than a village with just one resident. Panni Anikó Cser, a former television journalist who is now travelling around Portugal, stumbled upon this remote mountain spot and spent several nights there while exploring the country. After her visit, she shared her experience on TikTok, detailing her time in the tranquil hamlet of Talasnal – tucked away in the Lousa mountains in central Portugal.
Her video began inside the home and establishment of the village’s sole occupant, Jorge. « I’m the only resident – the only one with a mailbox, » Jorge remarked from behind the counter of his Bar o Curral.
Panni proceeded to film the bar, which, despite its isolated location, featured numerous tables and chairs, authentic Portuguese decorations, and a vintage CRT television positioned in the room’s corner. « At one point, over 200 people lived here… many families, » Jorge continued, explaining to Panni. « Then, in the 1950s and 1960s, people started to leave and the village became completely abandoned. »
Jorge also mentioned he frequently prepares chanfana, a regional speciality, for guests. « My son was a Scout and he came here with his Scout group to camp in the village – he’s the one who told me about this village, » Jorge revealed about how his relocation to Talasnal occurred. « I visited and fell in love with the village. »
Panni continued with her recommendation: « We stayed here for a few days and you can too. A community effort renovated the village in the early 2000s, and guesthouses and small restaurants brought life back to this magical village.
« Many hikers stay there – which is good, since also Jorge makes his living from it! »
Jorge’s establishment appears on TripAdvisor, meanwhile, where it boasts a score of 3.9 out of five based on 10 reviews. One past guest described their visit: « I would not choose another place to have breakfast: the best view of our lives, even if slightly hidden in the charming Talasnal village. A stunning scene accompanied by very cute kittens, who were there making company without bothering.
« A 100 per cent Portuguese experience that warmed the heart and filled the soul. A place that has conquered us completely, from the view to the little details that make all the difference. »
Reacting to Panni’s clip, one TikTok viewer remarked: « I would watch a 24 hour documentary about Jorge and his village! » A second fan declared: « I’m going to make it a goal to visit here before I die. »
A third person declared: « It looks absolutely beautiful. Perfect place for an artist retreat, frankly. » While a fourth TikTok viewer quipped: « I am formally, putting in my résumé to work at that beautiful tavern. »
According to Lousã’s official tourism website, the area boasts significant appeal: « Tourism contributes strongly to the development of the municipality with a strong flow of visitors, either considering the Serra da Lousã and the Schist Villages, or the rich and varied historical, archaeological, architectural and natural heritage. »
The site continues: « Lousã has been consolidating itself as a reference destination for Nature Tourism, Adventure and Cultural [with] a diversified offer that also covers a network of walking routes, three river beaches, mountain bike, trail and downhill circuits, the set composed of lousã castle, the historic centre, and the emblazoned houses, as well as two municipal museums. »
