A horror fire engulfed a high-rise building in Motherwell late on Thursday evening. Emergency services were called to deal with the fire incident on Shields Drive after receiving the alarm at 10.20pm on Thursday, March 5. Crews attended and a man was seen having fallen from a window of the tower block.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the fire was brought under control by responding crews. There were no additional injuries, and police say inquiries to determine the full circumstances remain ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: « We received a report of a fire within a property on Shields Drive in Motherwell around 10.20pm on Thursday, 5 March, 2026. Emergency services attended and a man was seen having fallen from the window of a property. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
« The fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and no-one else was injured. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. »
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: « We were alerted at 10.08pm on Thursday to reports of a fire within a multi-storey block of flats near Shields Drive in Motherwell. Operations control mobilised nine appliances and specialist appliances to the scene. One appliance remains in attendance.
« The fire has been extinguished. »
