A desperate family are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a horrifying incident in Galway city, where a man allegedly tried to throw a baby in a pushchair into oncoming traffic. The shocking event reportedly took place opposite Fána Búrca in Knocknacarra at approximately 1.25pm on Wednesday.
The mother claims an unknown man attempted to throw her baby, who was in a pushchair, onto the busy road. She was out for a walk when a man got off a bus and began walking her her direction, heading towards Tor Buí. As they crossed paths, he allegedly refused to move aside, threatening her with his long umbrella and launching into verbal abuse.
The woman alleges that she swerved the pushchair to avoid him, but as she did so, the man tried to direct her pushchair onto the road by lifting it up and pushing it.
She claims the front wheels of the buggy were already on the road while she frantically tried to pull it back, screaming for help.
According to Galway Beo, no passing cars stopped to assist, and a man walking his dog behind her allegedly ignored her cries and continued on his way.
The distraught mother described the alleged attacker as a tall white man in his 60s, dressed in a black raincoat, flat cap, and black sunglasses, and carrying a long black umbrella. He was also reported to have a large, bushy grey beard.
The young mum phoned her own mother who confronted the man as he was passing the walkway into Tor Buí.
The grandmother had a brief and heated exchange with the man, during which she noted his accent, believing it to be either Scottish or Northern Irish.
The family is now urging any witnesses to come forward and confirmed a police report has been filed. They are also asking for any dashcam footage to see if it captured the man or the incident.
