Brits planning overseas trips this spring are being urged to check their passports to avoid last-minute travel issues. The alert comes as many prepare for the busy Easter holidays, one of the peak travel periods for UK travellers. Each year, millions of British holidaymakers head abroad over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, with Good Friday expected to be the busiest travel day. However, there is one issue that could cause serious problems, or even prevent you from going on your trip altogether.
Checking passport validity is crucial before heading abroad, as you won’t be able to travel without a valid passport. The warning comes from HM Passport Office through a social media post on Tuesday. The post shared on X (formerly Twitter reads): “Planning spring or Easter travel? Check your passport now.”
It also directed travellers to the government website to start the process if they need to get a new passport.
Passport fees vary depending on the type and method of application. Standard 34-page adult passports cost £94.50 online or £107 by post, while 54-page frequent traveller passports cost £107.50 online or £120 by post.
Child passports are cheaper, with standard 34-page versions at £61.50 online or £74 by post, and 54-page frequent traveller passports at £74.50 online or £87 by post.
British nationals born on or before 2 September 1929 can apply for or renew a passport for free. Urgent applications or frequent traveller passports incur additional costs, and payment can be made via debit or credit card, cash, or cheque/postal order depending on the application method.

For travellers needing a passport urgently, HM Passport Office offers the One-Day Premium service, which allows same-day collection of a renewed adult passport, and the One-Week Fast Track service, which delivers the passport within seven days.
Urgent cases related to medical treatment, government business, or serious family emergencies should contact the Passport Adviceline.
To travel to European Union or Schengen countries, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before your departure and valid for at least three months beyond your planned return.
Other countries like Australia, China, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and India require at least six months validity from the date of entry, according to the Post Office.
