A fundraising campaign established for Bondi Beach hero Ahmed Al Ahmed is now approaching AUD$2million (£992,070), with contributions almost doubling overnight as donations continue pouring in from across the globe.
Al Ahmed received widespread acclaim for his courageous actions and swift response when he tackled one of the suspected gunmen during Sunday’s Sydney terror incident.
The fundraising appeal for the father-of-two had amassed a staggering AUD$1 million (£495,827) within hours.
The campaign has now smashed through that milestone, accumulating AUD$1.9million (£991,720) for the man at the time of publication, with the appeal rapidly approaching its AUD$3.1million (£1,537,305) target.
Heroics witnessed by the world
Remarkable footage captured the moment Ahmed Al Ahmed, 43, preserved countless lives by charging towards and confronting one of the attackers during Sunday’s terror assault in Sydney, Australia.
The video revealed Ahmed sheltering behind a vehicle as the gunman, apparently unaware of his proximity, discharged his weapon.
Prior to endangering himself, Ahmed allegedly informed his cousin: « I’m going to die, please see my family and tell them that I went down to save people’s lives. »
In an instant act of bravery, Ahmed rushed the attacker and seized the weapon from him before directing it at the gunman.
Bondi shooter forced to flee
The suspected shooter was compelled to withdraw as Ahmed gripped the firearm in his hands. Ahmed received widespread acclaim for his heroic actions in disarming the attacker and forcing him to flee.
The 43 year old greengrocer, who relocated to Australia from Syria in 2006, sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical care in hospital.
His cousin Hozay Alkanj confirmed that Ahmed’s initial operation was a success, explaining: « He’s done the first surgery, I think he’s got two or three [more], it depends. »
Ahmed’s mother Malakeh Hasan Al Ahmed revealed to ABC Australia that her son is a former police officer who previously served with the central intelligence forces.
‘Real life hero’
New South Wales Labour Premier Chris Minns disclosed that he had visited Ahmed during his hospital stay. Posting on X/Twitter, he declared: « Ahmed is a real-life hero.
« Last night, his incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives when he disarmed a terrorist at enormous personal risk. It was an honour to spend time with him just now and to pass on the thanks of people across NSW. »
The fundraising campaign, launched by Car Hub Australia alongside Canadian social media personality and mental health champion Zachery Dereniowski, aims to assist Ahmed during his recovery journey, as the Sydney shopkeeper remains hospitalised whilst healing from gunshot injuries suffered in the assault. Dereniowski said how Al Ahmed’s courage had deeply touched him.
« Sydney and its people hold a special place in my heart, as I called it home for two years… amidst the fear and chaos in Sydney, one man chose bravery, » he stated. « Ahmed is a father of two and a local shop owner who had never held a gun before. When strangers were in danger, Ahmed stepped up, risking his own life to save others.
In a moment of chaos and danger, he stepped forward without hesitation
So far, over 33,000 people have donated, with the largest donation of AUD$99,999 (£49,742.02 ) believed to be from billionaire and American hedge fund manager Bill Ackman – one of the world’s wealthiest men.
Briton Steven Lawton sent a heartfelt message of support along with his donation.
« My condolences to all those affected by this terrible event. Great Britain stands with Australia.
« This gentleman instinctively ran towards danger at mortal risk to himself and saved lives. He is a lesson to us all, and a credit to himself and his family. »
An American donor penned: « You are a hero to the Jewish community and the entire world. Thank you from the United States.
« Thank you, Ahmed. Happy Hanukkah to the Jewish people, and may God bless all the victims and their families. »
‘Aussie battler’
A host of Australian donors also voiced their appreciation, with many commending him for embodying the genuine spirit of Australia’s national character of multiculturalism and the legendary « Aussie battler ».
The expression, widely used in Australia to characterise its own cultural identity, fundamentally refers to someone who is an underdog who overcomes all obstacles to accomplish the impossible, through their determination, resilience, and resourcefulness.
Contributions keep pouring in following the horrific assault that claimed 15 innocent lives and left dozens more wounded.
Suspected terrorist Naveed Akram, 24, was detained at the scene whilst his alleged accomplice and father Sajid, 50, was shot dead by officers.
