The Austrian has a very close relationship with the driver and is “absolutely convinced” he would have beaten Norris if the team parted ways with Horner sooner.
« We had to do something because our on-track performance was lagging,” Marko told De Limburger. “If we had done that sooner, we would have gotten back on track faster this year, and Max would have become world champion. I’m absolutely convinced of that. »
Verstappen finished just two points behind Norris, despite claiming more Grand Prix victories than either of the McLaren drivers throughout the season. The Dutchman won the last three races of the season, but his miserable early form proved too much to overcome.
It has been a year of transition for Red Bull, who have lost two of their long-time senior figures in Horner and Marko. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar will race next to Verstappen in 2026 after an inspiring debut season.
The departing duo are reportedly being paid handsomely in their exits, however. Horner was said to have been given an £80million payout and can return to the paddock next year. He has held some discussions about doing so with a new team in an ownership role.
Marko will also receive his full salary for 2026 in a payout, according to German outlet Bild. That figure is said to be in the region of £8.7m.
Marko had been with the team since its inception and decided to step down after being involved in motorsport for six decades.
“I have been involved in motorsport for six decades now, and the past 20-plus years at Red Bull have been an extraordinary and extremely successful journey,” Marko said in a statement.
“It has been a wonderful time that I have been able to help shape and share with so many talented people. Everything we have built and achieved together fills me with pride.
“Narrowly missing out on the world championship this season has moved me deeply and made it clear to me that now is the right moment for me personally to end this very long, intense, and successful chapter.
“I wish the entire team continued success and am convinced that they will be fighting for both world championship titles again next year.”
