Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will « crash and burn » unless King Charles acts now, a royal commentator has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex should be given the « half-in, half-out » royal roles Harry previously suggested, according to Tina Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair. She believes Harry and Meghan require these positions urgently as current income sources, including their Netflix deal, are « starting to dry up ».

Ms Brown wrote: « The Sussexes’ revenue streams are starting to dry up. Before the Sussexes crash and burn, the House of Windsor needs to put aside schadenfreude and grip the problem. Give Harry and Meghan a limited international role. »

She makes this case in her latest Substack essay, published amid speculation Netflix wishes to replace the Sussexes with Prince William and Princess Catherine to take their royal coverage in a new direction.

Reports had suggested Meghan, 44, was poised to return to acting after the Netflix contract concludes. The star enjoyed a successful acting career with credits in legal drama Suits and sci-fi show Fringe amongst other programmes and films.

However, calls have now intensified for Meghan to instead join Harry with royal engagements once more.

They stepped back from royal duties for their life in California in 2020 but, with The Firm facing scrutiny recently over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson’s links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, pressure remains for the monarch to make sweeping changes.

One possibility could involve deploying his son and Meghan in what has been characterised as « half-in, half-out » capacities. It is believed Harry and Charles discussed these proposals as early as September last year.

This meeting held particular significance as it marked the first occasion Harry and Charles had convened since early 2024.

The former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: « Could it not have worked, half in half out? He is the spare, he isn’t going to be King, so why couldn’t they have worked out some sort of compromise?

« He’s a natural with the crowds: funny, informal, charming. This week (when Harry had returned to London for the visit) has shown what a great loss he is.

« But as far as the Palace is concerned, it seems the basic conundrum remains: how can a working member of the royal family, even a part-timer, also operate in the commercial world? »

Harry and Meghan, who married in May 2018, are scheduled to travel to Australia next month, where they will undertake charitable activities, comparable to responsibilities fulfilled by members of the royal family.
