Grand Theft Auto 6 is without a doubt the most anticipated game of 2026, if not the entire decade. With 13 years since the release of GTA V and eight years since Rockstar’s last big project in Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 6 appears to have been in development for a very long time – especially with its several delays.
Recreating the huge landmass of Leonida and Vice City within it, what we’ve seen of GTA 6 in its trailers so far has been nothing short of mind blowing. It looks like Rockstar is looking to blend some of that unbelievable realism from Red Dead 2 with the open world sandbox gameplay that GTA fans know and love.
With such an ambitious project being developed over such a long period of time, the true development cost of the game has long been speculated among fans – and one YouTuber reckons they’ve figured out just how much money Rockstar has spent on the game so far.
As reported by GamesRadar+, YouTuber Saukko505 has taken it upon themselves to peruse the publicly available financial documents of Rockstar from the UK’s HMRC website. As Rockstar is a limited company in the UK, it’s legally required to publish its accounts, with the full statements for the 2024-2025 financial year now available for all to see.
Interestingly, these documents appear to show financial figures for the studios based in other countries too, not just the ones in Edinburgh, Dundee, Leeds, Lincoln and London. Scrolling through the 36 page document and the others from years prior, Saukko505 looks at Rockstar’s total expenditure to come up with a rough figure of $3bn total.
However, it’s important to note that this is roughly the total expenditure of Rockstar’s entire business. The studio hasn’t just been working on GTA 6 since 2020 – it’s also had team members updating GTA Online, Red Dead Online, and publishing the Definitive Edition remasters of the original trilogy.
So, it’s impossible to say just how much of this total expenditure has gone directly into getting GTA 6 across the line. However, given that title appears to have been the studios main focus for the best part of the last decade, it’s not a stretch to imagine that a good chunk of that cost can be allocated to the project.
Rockstar will likely never provide a proper figure for how much GTA 6 has cost to make, but using these rough estimates, it sure looks like it’s set to become the most expensive entertainment product of our time. It’s thought that the next most expensive game to have been published so far is Genshin Impact with a reported total development and marketing cost of over $900m.
Let’s just see if that development cost will be reflected in its price. We don’t know how much GTA 6 will cost at launch, but gamers are worried it could push close to the $100 mark given its incredible prestige.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
