Golf LIVE: Tiger Woods set new rules as Rory McIlroy makes statement | Golf | Sport

Former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes goodwill towards Woods, despite his status as one of the game’s all-time greats, is beginning to wane.

The Irishman stated: « A lot of people are running out of patience now, including himself and his family by all accounts from what he said yesterday.

« He realises the seriousness of the situation and I think it’s a line in the sand. »

Woods’ decision to step back from captaincy consideration leaves the US lagging in its planning, with Europe having reappointed Luke Donald four weeks ago.

McGinley, who guided Europe to victory in 2014, believes Woods could be considered in the future, despite showing little obvious enthusiasm.

He commented: « It’s certainly something down the road that he may evolve towards but he hasn’t really shown a strong appetite towards that. »
