Galatasaray have threatened legal action against UEFA over the serious injury sustained by Noa Lang, having already submitted a formal complaint. The winger suffered a horrific injury, severing his thumb on an advertising hoarding during his team’s Champions League loss to Liverpool, and the Turkish outfit are contemplating pursuing a compensation claim through the courts.
In remarks to HTSpor, Galatasaray general secretary Eray Yazgan said: « We made a complaint to UEFA representatives after the match. They also made their investigations. UEFA will evaluate the issue. We are in talks with lawyers. We will file a lawsuit for compensation to UEFA. We will ask for our victimisation in terms of salary to be eliminated. » Official representatives from Liverpool were observed examining the advertising hoarding where the incident occurred.
Liverpool refused to comment whilst investigations continue, although the club have expressed their wishes for the player’s full and swift recovery. UEFA have also been contacted for comment.
Lang, who was administered oxygen and required a stretcher to leave the pitch, was taken directly to hospital following the injury, which required significant medical attention, and has subsequently confirmed his operation was successful.
He posted on Instagram: « Surgery went well. Thanks for all the messages [red heart emoji]. » He captioned the original post: « S*** happens. »
The incident took place in the closing moments when Lang extended an arm to prevent himself tumbling at considerable pace, but his thumb became trapped between the advertising board and a barrier.
Victor Osimhen also sustained an injury during the fixture, with a Galatasaray statement confirming that both players were taken to hospital.
A club statement on both players read: « In the first half of our away match against Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg, our player Victor Osimhen took a blow to his arm and completed the first half, but following checks at halftime, he was not played in the second half due to the risk of a fracture in his arm.

« After the match, under the supervision of our medical team, examinations at the hospital revealed a fracture in our player’s right forearm, and it was casted. A decision regarding surgery will be made in the coming days following further evaluations.
« In the second half of the same match, our player Noa Lang, who suffered an injury, sustained a serious cut to his right thumb, and it is planned for him to undergo surgery in Liverpool in the coming hours with the participation of our medical team. »
Liverpool were leading 4-0 at the point of Lang’s injury, with a devastating attacking performance seeing Arne Slot‘s team emphatically overturn a disappointing first leg reverse.
The Premier League champions are scheduled to meet holders Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, aiming to settle the score after their elimination by the Parisians last season.
Should Liverpool progress, they will square off against either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the semi-finals, with Arsenal, Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona the remaining teams on the other side of the draw.
