Taking a cruise is usually an enjoyable and laid-back experience, but certain passenger behaviours can truly spoil things for the crew. Lucy Southerton, a seasoned crew member with nine years’ of experience working on cruise ships, has unveiled some of the top pet peeves shared by her fellow workers.
Boasting a loyal following of over 65,000 subscribers on YouTube under the name Cruising as Crew, Southerton lifts the lid on behind-the-scenes experiences whilst offering invaluable tips for cruise enthusiasts. In a recent video, she explored the frustrations encountered by crew members, spanning everything from untidy cabins to unwanted flirting. Here are the four behaviours passengers should avoid to ensure a smoother sailing experience.

1. Messy Cabins
According to Southerton, crew members – particularly housekeeping staff and stewardesses – are frustrated by passengers leaving their cabins in disarray.
She stressed that their role is to clean and sanitise the cabins, rather than tidy up after passengers. « It’s crazy to think they’re only on board for five days because of the amount of stuff that’s everywhere, » Southerton remarked.
She encouraged passengers to remain considerate and respectful of crew members’ duties whilst occupying their cabins.
2. Flirting with Crew Members
Southerton warned passengers against partaking in unwanted flirting with crew members, describing it as a form of sexual harassment. She shared the experiences of male cabin crew who found it awkward and irritating when passengers overstepped the mark.
« It’s hard when they take it another way and they think that they have a chance with you just because you’re a sexy crew member, » Southerton explained.
3. Lack of Manners
One of the most frequent complaints amongst cabin crew is the lack of basic courtesy from certain passengers. Southerton emphasised the significance of simple pleasantries such as saying « please » and « thank you ».
She recalled occasions where passengers would issue demands without any semblance of politeness, underlining the necessity for respectful conduct, particularly in a holiday environment.
4. Bragging
Finally, she voiced her distaste for passengers who indulge in showing off, particularly when it involves displaying wealth in front of those less well-off.
She encouraged passengers to be conscious of their audience and to avoid boasting, especially to crew members working relentlessly to provide for their families.
« Brag to people who are on a similar level to you, » Southerton advised, emphasising the importance of consideration and compassion.
By remaining mindful of these actions, travellers can help create a more agreeable and courteous atmosphere aboard cruise vessels, encouraging positive exchanges between passengers and crew members alike.
