Lots of us have pets, and many Brits love dogs.
They offer company, love and encouragement when we need it the most. This is why it’s so important that we keep them safe.
TikTok vet Amir Anwary, known as amirthevet on the platform, recently warned dog owners about common foods that could be « toxic to dogs ». He wanted to alert people to them after a pet owner recently had to pay a very expensive vet bill after their dog consumed something pretty dangerous.
In a bid to help people out, he outlined four common foods found around the home that could potentially put your dog at risk. We all have nice treats in the kitchen, but it’s important to keep them away from pets.
According to Amir, we should all be being cautious with the types of foods our dogs have access to. Here’s what you need to know.
Macademia nuts
The first food Amir talked about was macademia nuts, which can be toxic to dogs. They can cause vomiting, weakness and other symptoms that’s not good for your pet.
According to Amir, the reason they’re harmful is « not entirely known, » but your pooch shouldn’t consume them. Experts say the margin of safety following ingestion is small.
Just a few nuts can lead to intoxication in a small to medium-sized dog, which means you need to keep the snack locked away.
Yeast and raw rough
Yeast can also be toxic to dogs, especially if it’s raw when consumed. This is because yeast ferments the dough, producing a gas that can cause bloating.
Yeast also produces ethanol, which can cause a dog’s blood alcohol level to rise. This can result in inebriation, lack of coordination and central nervous system depression.
Amir admitted it’s something a lot of people don’t know, but it can cause two big problems. In some cases, consequences can be fatal.
Avocados
The popular food is also dangerous for dogs. Every part of the avocado, including the flesh, skin, seeds and leaves, contains persin, which is a fungicidal toxin that can be harmful to dogs.
If consumed, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, heart issues, breathing difficulties, swelling and fatigue. Amir said he would avoid feeding dogs avocados at « all costs » to prevent any issues arising.
Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs, having the potential to cause kidney failure and even death. The exact reason why they’re so dangerous is still being examined but tartaric acid, which is found in the fruit, has been suggested to play a part.
While he admits some pet owners have fed the fruit to their dogs with no isssues, he said things can get « really bad » when your dog reacts to eating them. He urged all pet owners to avoid giving them to their dogs, as it’s simply not worth the risk.
If you think your dog has consumed anything that could pose danger to their health, always seek the advice of a vet immediately. It’s vital to get advice before attempting to treat them in any way.
