The unseemly spat between Ukraine and its biggest military ally is music to the Kremlin’s ears.
Reports have now emerged that Putin is preparing to unleash a massive psychological warfare campaign on Ukraine in a bid to provoke a coup against Zelensky.
The idea is to replace him with a political leader who will kow-tow to the Kremlin and cave in to all its demands, in effect turning Ukraine into a client state of Russia.
A Moscow source told the Russian human rights activist Vladimir Osechkin that the FSB and Russia‘s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) are preparing a series of « information-psychological special operations » (IPSO) against Ukraine‘s President.
Writing on his website Gulagu.net, Osechkin said: « A source in Moscow reported in the evening that at least two departments and directorates of the FSB, together with one of the operational departments of the SVR, are working on organising a ‘Maidan’ in Kyiv in the near future with the goal of overthrowing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and with arguments that almost completely repeat the statements (manipulations) of Donald Trump.
« Earlier, the same source warned at the end of 2024 about the preparation of a series of IPSOs against the President of Ukraine.
« Apparently, now the Russian special services will move to more decisive actions with the use of the agent apparatus in Ukraine and those persons who would like to take leading positions in the office of the President and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and would agree to all the conditions of the Kremlin. »
Maidan refers to a series of protests that started in November 2013 and eventually led to the removal of the pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
Mr Osechkin is a fierce critic of the Putin regime and runs the anti-corruption website Gulagu.net from Paris, where he had to flee from Russia.
Kremlin insiders can scarcely believe their luck, as Trump turns against Zelensky and pivots towards Moscow.
Dmitry Medvedvev, a close Putin ally, wrote on X: « If you’d told me just three months ago that these were the words of the US president, I would have laughed out loud. »
