Fernando Alonso was surprised at how smoothly he transitioned to a vegetarian diet later in his Formula One career, following in fellow racer Lewis Hamilton’s footsteps. The two-time world champion is set to continue racing for Aston Martin in the upcoming F1 season.
The 43-year-old has committed to a deal that extends until 2026, which, if he completes his contract, could make him the oldest driver to compete in the sport since the 1970s. The Spanish ace began his F1 career in 2001 and has been exploring new methods to maintain peak physical condition in his elder years.
Last year, it was disclosed that he had given up meat in favour of a plant-based diet, and the racing icon has confessed to being surprised by the ease of the dietary shift.
Speaking in DAZN’s ‘Decoded’ documentary series, Alonso said: « The vegetarian diet was easier than expected. Sometimes, I miss a bit of Iberian ham or things like that, but not very often.
« At first, I found it hard to believe that there were ways to maintain protein without eating meat and fish, but everything has protein in one form or another. And some shakes can be better than what you eat. I have noticed the benefits in my energy levels. I think I sleep better, but everyone is different. I encourage everyone to try different things.
« After the age of 33 or 34, you start to lose one per cent of muscle per year. It happens to all human beings, so we try to makeup for that loss. My diet has been thought carefully. We have to maintain the same weight all year round. »
Alonso also explained the comprehensively custom-made nature of his racing setup, as he added: « The F1 is tailor-made for me, adapting to my weight. The seat is made in February, totally to the shape of my back and shoulders, so I can’t afford to be more than half a kilo overweight for the 11 months of the season. »
The athlete went on to highlight the importance of meticulous diet control to excel in a sport where even the smallest detail can make a significant difference. Echoing a similar nutritional philosophy, Hamilton also opts for a plant-based diet.
Alonso, however, doesn’t rely solely on his own instinct to maintain peak condition but instead listens to experts and specialists. He said: « Nutrition is the fuel we put into our bodies. Over the years, you have to change it. Your body doesn’t process the same foods when you are 20 as it does at 40.
« You don’t digest in the same way, you don’t need the same muscle mass… I try to take care of my diet, but not based on my feelings; rather on nutritionists and my team’s advice. This year, we placed significant emphasis on my diet. »
The racing maestro also gives insight into his current food regime, which largely excludes meat. Alonso added: « We follow a vegetarian approach and avoid as much meat as I used to eat in the past. I believe it has improved my body’s overall functioning, and I feel stronger. »
