Donald Trump’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling on his tariff policy shows his authority is beginning to crack, an expert has claimed. The US President said he would impose a 10% levy after the Supreme Court struck down his previous import taxes on Friday.
But in a post on Truth Social on Saturday, he said he would be increasing this to the higher rate “effective immediately”, before announcing 15% global tariffs. Speaking following the Supreme Court’s decision which declared that it is unconstitutional for the president to unilaterally set and change tariffs, Professor Rajneesh Narula claimed that Trump could now begin to experience domestic pressure as a result. Mr Narula, who is a Professor in International Business Regulation and specialises in global trade policy and economic power, told the Daily Express: “Trump will almost certainly look for a workaround — this ruling was widely expected.
“The reality is that his tariff policy has been placing the greatest strain on domestic consumers rather than achieving its intended external impact.
“Despite the bold rhetoric, the tariffs have not delivered the outcomes that were promised, and at some point someone needs to acknowledge that.
“It’s a classic case of the emperor having no clothes: who will be the first to say enough is enough?”
Trump said he was “absolutely ashamed” of justices who voted to strike down his tariffs and called the ruling “deeply disappointing”.
“Their decision is incorrect,” he said. “But it doesn’t matter because we have very powerful alternatives.”

Mr Narula added: “Many Americans genuinely believed the tariffs would lower prices and strengthen the domestic economy, but that simply hasn’t happened.
“Combined with the court’s pushback, this moment could mark the beginning of a broader domestic pushback to Trump’s economic supremacy.
“Domestic resistance is ultimately what shapes and constrains power.
“In the immediate term, if Trump continues to pursue workarounds, little may change. But the foundations of the policy and the authority behind it are clearly beginning to crack.”
A YouGov poll in light of the ruling found that 60% of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of the decision with only 23% opposed to it.
Additionally, a majority of Americans say they expect the effect of the tariff policy to be largely negative, both for themselves and the country as a whole, according to polling from Pew Research Center.
