Machu Picchu is a dream destination for many, but the journey, which requires a flight to Lima and another to Cusco to reach the ancient city and takes up to 15 hours from the UK, might seem less dreamy. If the sights of Machu Picchu feel a little too far away, or you’re not a fan of long-haul flights, one destination has been compared to the historic Incan site that attracts over two million visitors each year, and it’s a whole lot closer than Peru.
While the flight over is much shorter than the one from the UK to Lima, like Machu Picchu, this destination does offer a challenging hike. Driving is also an option, but getting to this « enchanting » yet isolated destination requires a scenic route involving narrow roads and steep cliffs.
Situated in the Teno Mountains of Tenerife, Masca is a tiny hamlet that offers breathtaking views over the island’s rugged landscape and volcanic boulders. It is perfect for those looking for a more adventurous holiday. According to folk tales, the cobbled street village was an old pirate village, and today, it is still home to around 100 people.
Surrounded by palm trees, cacti and streams, there’s even an 18th-century church you can visit and an abundance of craft shops to explore, as well as bars and restaurants to rest in once you’ve made the challenging journey into the mountains.
What makes the landscape so striking and similar to Machu Picchu is the Roque de Cantana, a rugged peak that slices through the valley, providing a stunning backdrop.
Visitors on Tripadvisor have described it as “remarkable”, with one user called Neila Silva saying: “The beauty of this valley enchants everyone.”
Its unique location, which was only accessible by foot until the first road to the village was built in 1972, means only two to three hundred people are allowed into the valley daily.
If you feel like being one of them, there are some things you should bear in mind when planning your trip. Due to its location in the Teno Mountains, Masca is prone to cloud formation, which can sometimes make visibility difficult.
The best time to visit is in the milder months, between March and May or September and November, when you’re more likely to be guaranteed clear skies.
If you do feel like taking on the challenge of hiking there, one of the most popular hikes on the entire island is located in Masca. It takes around three to four hours one way.
Known as the Masca Gorge hike, it is recommended for more experienced hikers. The route takes you through the Masca Gorge, a deep canyon that eventually leads to Masca Beach.
Once at the beach, there’s always the option to take a water taxi to Los Gigantes harbour instead of hiking back. However, the strenuous hike does require a permit, which is free for Federated Mountaineers but will cost you €30 otherwise.
Access to Masca is entirely free, and you can even get the public bus to the mountain town if driving there yourself or embarking on the hike up doesn’t quite take your fancy. Jumping on the bus will cost around €1.5-3 depending on where you get it from, and you’ll need to look out for the number 355.
