Some people travel for art, some travel for sea and sun, and some travel for food. If you love to explore the best restaurants, then there is one underrated city that you need to visit.
In the first few months of 2026, this Swedish city has seen 20 new restaurants open alongside its already famous Michelin starred ones. Not only does this city offer something for every foodie,there’s also an amusement park, a cozy cafe culture and some truly stunning streets to wander.
This incredible city is Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. Often overlooked for its more famous cousins of Stockholm or Malmö but it shouldn’t be.
The city is home to five single Michelin-starred restaurants and one with two stars. These restaurants serve everything from Japanese food to stunning seafood.
If you’ve got the money for a truly special meal then the two-starred restaurant Signum needs to be on your list. The menu focuses on seafood and fish complemented with produce grown in the on-site gardens. All the ingredients are from Scandinavia, and a meal here will be made up of 18 beautifully composed courses, all with in season produce.
If you’d rather wander through the city and enjoy a bite or two on your way then you need to plan your visit for May. Gothenburg will revamp its iconic 19th century fish market to host a brand new seafood festival. The whole building, including its floating outdoor terrace will be transformed into a seafood festival with the best of the best showcasing their wares.
Also opening in May is Vassen Market, a 6,500 square meter waterfront paradise with street food, cocktails, live music and art popups and as well as skateboarding. It’s all built from recycled containers and surrounded by lush green pocket parks, making it the ultimate destination for a weekend wander.
Later in the year, the Slakthuset district will host three days of music, food and local drink. The neighbourhood festival in July will be packed with music, food and drink and will be a perfect example of the laid back community spirit of the city.
If you’d rather spend your time on rides rather than sipping wines, then you can’t miss another Gothenburg claim to fame — Liseberg. This theme park opened in 1923 and is the largest in Scandinavia, attracting visitors from all over.
It’s got 42 rides with something for everyone, and makes for a truly thrilling day out. Just make sure you wear your walking shoes because the park covers 42 acres.
