England player ratings vs Japan with one 4/10 as Foden and Rogers struggle | Football | Sport

England produced a display that firmly cast doubts about their World Cup credentials in a 1-0 loss to Japan, courtesy of a first-half strike from Kaoru Mitoma. The Brighton star, no stranger to facing English opposition given his Premier League experience, was perfectly placed to convert a first-half counter-attack. Japan had further opportunities to extend their advantage as Thomas Tuchel’s side rounded off this international break in deeply disappointing fashion.

Following the draw with Uruguay, England suffered defeat as the hosts, deprived of Harry Kane through injury, lacked any genuine cutting edge while starting without a recognised striker. Substitute Marcus Rashford’s 77th-minute attempt was, remarkably, England’s first shot on target. Morgan Rogers later blazed over from close range. England player ratings vs Japan

Jordan Pickford – 7

Had little chance with Japan’s opener but produced a fine save with his legs.

Repeatedly caught out defensively. Well below par. A genuine liability.

Very much a Tuchel favourite – and he gave his all to keep the backline together.

Handed the armband to demonstrate Tuchel’s faith in him but nowhere near his finest performance.

Unfortunate to see Mitoma’s effort deflect off him. Left exposed at the back.

Performed solidly and rattled a shot off the top of the crossbar.

England v Japan - International Friendly

Ben White struggled against Japan (Image: Getty)

Tidy and composed, with some decent distribution but failed to truly unlock Japan’s defence.

Worked hard but surrendered possession ahead of Japan’s goal. Far from his finest showing.

Drifted wide and struggled to make an impact. Attempted to create chances but lacked that crucial spark.

His pace and direct running at least posed some danger. Among England’s standout performers.

Deployed as a false nine to little effect, offering minimal attacking threat.
