But can a tin of fish really help your hair colour? Board-certified dermatologist Dr Jenny Liu told Women.com that « foods like oysters, salmon and sardines can support healthy hair growth and potentially delay the onset of gray hair ».
She explained that sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and selenium, while oysters are high in zinc — all nutrients she says support hair and scalp health.
Research also suggests diet may influence hair pigmentation. According to Healthline, studies have found that deficiencies in vitamin B12, vitamin D and iron — nutrients found in foods including fatty fish — are associated with premature greying.
Sardines also supply omega-3s which a number of nutritionists say helps maintain healthy hair follicles through reducing inflamation and supporting scalp strength.
However, Dr Liu stresses that genetics remain the dominant driver of grey hair with melanocyte stem cells naturally reducing activity over time, meaning diet alone can’t completely prevent it.
That said, targeted nutrition might delay premature greying, especially if underlying deficiencies are corrected.
Sardines, for example, are rich in hair-supporting nutrients and could be a tasty way to give your follicles a fighting chance.
What is the Sardine Challenge?
It involves exactly what it says on the tin — pardon the pun. All you have to do is eat nothing but sardines for a set period of time.
The sardine fast was first coined by Dr Frederick Hatfield back in 2012 who is known by many as Dr Squat for becoming the first person in competition to squat over 460kg in competition.
Now it’s been taken forward by Dr Bosworth who says the fish-only diet can completely reset your metabolism.
However, according to Men’s Health, sardines are lacking in fibre, complex carbohydrates and essential vitamins, so expect digestive issues, a lack of energy, and reduced brainpower.
