President Donald Trump joked about giving Elvis Presley a beating, a quip that fell flat with conservatives.

On March 23, Fox News suspended its regular programming and live-streamed President Trump, 79, as he toured the Graceland museum. The mansion estate in Memphis, Tennessee, belonged to the late Jailhouse Rock singer. The president visited Presley’s former home after taking part in a Memphis Safe Task Force roundtable on tackling violent crime.

Trump admired a replica of a black Presley guitar after signing on the body.

Trump spoke with two members of staff at the tourist attraction, asking, « Could I have taken him in a fight? » before pressing them, « Do you think I could’ve taken Elvis in a fight? »

One staff member jokingly responded, « I don’t know. You might, » whilst the other replied candidly, « I think he would’ve been respectful enough to let you win! »

Trump smiled at the pair as the staff member mentioned how the late singer earned a seventh degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and subsequently an eighth degree black belt from Master Kang Rhee in 1974.

However, critics did not find Trump’s jest amusing and questioned why the president wasn’t focusing on ending the war against Iran, which began on February 28.

A critic said, « Only Trump would imagine a showdown with Elvis and coming out on top. Lots of laughs! »

A third stated, « Shouldn’t you be taking care of Americans and ending a war? »

Whilst Trump faced criticism, he also had a supporter who appreciated the light-hearted moment and declared, « Funniest president ever. »

Prior to his visit to Elvis’ home, Graceland, President Trump held a roundtable discussion about the accomplishments of the Memphis Safe Task Force.

Trump digressed as he claimed to have personally known the rock and roll legend, but also acknowledged he never met him.

« You know, I’m going to see Graceland after this? I think, is that right? » he said at the press briefing.

« I love Elvis. I never met Elvis. I met ’em all. Frank Sinatra, I knew all of ’em, I never met Elvis, » he rambled.

« Sometimes I feel I should tell a little fib, say, ‘I knew him well.’ I love Elvis but I never met him, but iI’m gonna go see Graceland after this, I think. I’m sure it’s not going to be a very long stay. But I want to see that. »
