NHS doctor Dr Karan Rajan has advised his followers to stop splashing out on wellness drinks from the supermarket.
Instead, he revealed a simple recipe that can be whipped up at home without breaking the bank.
In a TikTok video from November last year, Dr Karan discouraged people from purchasing store-bought products, advocating instead for a homemade mixture which « can actually improve your gut health« .
The first ingredient you need is either lemons or oranges.
Dr Karan highlighted that these fruits are packed with a soluble fibre called pectin, which acts as a prebiotic to nourish gut bacteria.
They’re also loaded with flavonoids that help reduce inflammation, and high levels of vitamin C, which is « key to maintaining the gut lining ».
Next, you’ll need a « cheeky bit » of ginger, brimming with gingerols.
This natural compound found in ginger root can help « increase gastric emptying ».
Ginger is chock-full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and may also alleviate nausea, arthritis, and pain.
By aiding digestion, ginger can also minimise the risk of bloating, reports Surrey Live.
Dr Karan added: « Spice it up with a bit of black pepper and turmeric. These spices work synergistically, as the anti-inflammatory compound piperine in black pepper enhances the absorption of cucurmin found in turmeric.
« And the reason to add olive oil is because all the active compounds I’ve mentioned so far are fat soluble, therefore more easily absorbed with a source of dietary fat. Not to mention olive oil is rich in polyphenols, which itself is a prebiotic for your gut bugs.
« Most of the commercial wellness shots are devoid of fibre because they’re juiced up, and the pitch and pulp are filtered out and discarded, which is the most important bit. »
The health expert then sweetens his concoction with a liberal drizzle of honey to counteract the sourness, and throws in mint for its soothing menthol content, which can « relieve » tummy troubles.
He tosses all the components into a blender, advising to pour in water to taste.
Devotees of nutritious eating have been voicing their opinions online, with some slamming high street chains for exorbitant pricing.
Serena said: « I used to buy ginger shots at my local supermarket. One day I made it myself and realised the supermarket charged a 700% mark-up. Never bought another. »
