Tottenham star Dejan Kulusevski has shared an uplifting message on social media whilst continuing his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury. The 25-year-old hasn’t featured for Spurs in 10 months following surgery, and it’s evident he’s desperate to make his comeback.
On Tuesday, Kulusevski posted on Instagram with the biblical reference, « Jesaja 40:31, » as his caption. That verse reads: « …but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. »
The song ‘For a Better Day’ by fellow Swede Avicii has also been featured in Kulusevski’s post. The significance of both his caption and musical choice suggests that Kulusevski is finding his lengthy absence frustrating but appears confident that his return to action is approaching.
Whether that comeback materialises this season remains uncertain, with interim head coach Igor Tudor providing an update on his condition towards the end of last month. He said: « He’s had really big problems as you know, but he’s positive and also the doctors are positive, so we’ll see next week how he’s going. We hope [he can play this season]. In this moment, we don’t know. »
Tudor could do with having Kulusevski, whom he managed briefly at Juventus, to be match-ready and available, particularly as Tottenham endure a succession of humiliating results. The Lilywhites have suffered defeat in their previous six fixtures and shipped 18 goals.
Almost one third of those came on Tuesday night in the Champions League last-16 first leg against Atletico Madrid. The north Londoners trailed 4-0 after merely 22 minutes, with Antonin Kinsky withdrawn following the third goal after committing his second serious error of the match.
Goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro have offered Spurs hope for the second leg, but prior to that, they travel to Anfield for a Premier League encounter against Liverpool. Alongside numerous injuries, Tudor may be without Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha after both departed due to head injuries.
The 47year-old has suffered defeat in all four matches during his interim spell, with some scathing assessments delivered regarding the club, both from outside observers and those within the squad. Micky van de Ven was amongst those to comment following the 5-2 hammering, with the centre-back, who bore responsibility for the second goal, offering some stark realities.
Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, he said: « It’s actually a doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. For our goalkeeper [Kinsky] it’s terrible as well of course. You don’t wish that on anyone. For 15 minutes we just conceded goals that you really can’t do anything about.
« Right now we’re just taking blow after blow after blow. It’s just really tough, and now we also have an important match this weekend that I won’t be able to play in because I’m suspended.
« It’s a really terrible period, I can tell you that. It’s really, really awful. I’m not on my phone anymore. I’m completely done with it. Just my family, so it’ll be fine. It’s rough, really rough. I have to keep going. It’s part of it, that’s life and we’ll see what’s coming. »
