Conor McGregor has announced he will run to become the next President of Ireland. Posing in a ‘Make Ireland Great Again’ cap, the 36-year-old took to Instagram to confirm his intentions. It comes just days after he met President Donald Trump in the White House where he claimed « some towns have been completely overrun » due to the « illegal immigration racket » in his home country.
Trump, a well-known fan of martial arts, branded the controversial fighter his « favourite Irishman » saying: « He’s got the best tattoos I’ve ever seen. » The MMA fighter announced his bid with an image of himself standing in front of a private jet, wearing a vest and holding one of his four children. In the post McGregor urged people to vote for him « have your voice heard ».
Alongside the picture McGregor wrote: « Ireland must fully implement the EU Migration Pact by June 12, 2026.
« So between now and 12 June 2026, several pieces of legislation have to be passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas & then signed by the President. The next presidential election must take place by 11 Nov 2025. Who else will stand up to the Government and oppose this bill?
« Any other Presidential candidate they attempt to put forward will be of no resistance to them. I will! For clarity also, as President, I would put forth this bill to referendum. Although I greatly oppose this pact, it is neither mine nor the government’s choice to make.
« It is the people of Ireland’s choice! Always! That is a true democracy! I would also be curious to hear our government officials’ reasoning for agreeing with this pact so fervently. I would love to hear the debates! Followed then by a vote!
!This is the future of Ireland with me as President. All citizens of Ireland have a voice and a choice on their future! God bless our people! Vote McGregor and have your voice heard! »
McGregor’s ambition will not come as a surprise to many as in recent years he has has spoken about entering politics, embracing the populist approach taken by people such as Trump by speaking out against « the establishment » and criticising the country’s actions on illegal migration.
The former UFC superstar told reporters he visited the White House to « raise the issues the people of Ireland face ».
He added: « It is a travesty; our government is the government of zero action with zero accountability. Our money is being spent on overseas issues which have nothing to do with the Irish people. »
