This is the shocking moment a British tourist used a metal post to smash up check-in kiosks, nearby counters and railings during an early morning rampage in Hong Kong Airport. During his rampage, the man, 35, damaged 10 check-in desks at the airport’s Terminal 1 at around 6am local time on Monday (February 16), before being arrested for possessing Viagra.
The man, who arrived in Hong Kong in November and was intending to buy a ticket to leave, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and for possessing four Viagra pills. Shocking footage shows the vandal, wearing blue jeans, a black jumper and a black man bag, shoving kiosks to the floor in front of shocked travellers. He then picked up a metal pole and repeatedly smashed it into the check-in screens before using his trolley to knock down railings and attacking the desks and damaging a glass panel, according to local media.
« Airport Authority staff and airport security personnel rushed to the scene and warned the man to stop causing further damage, » a spokesperson for the authority said. « Police have arrested the man and launched an investigation. »
Police confirmed he was a 35-year-old British tourist, and he was arrested for criminal damage and possession of « part one » poisons found in his suitcase. Viagra pills are illegal to possess in Hong Kong without a prescription. Those possessing the impotence drug can face up to two years in jail and a £9,400 fine.
The man was arrested at the bus unloading area at the airport.
This comes just days after it was revealed that the iconic Japanese town, Fujiyoshida, announced it would be cancelling its popular cherry blossom festival amid unmanageable numbers of tourists and poor behaviour. The influx of visitors has led to chronic traffic congestion and litter, with some residents revealing they’ve suffered from visitors trespassing or even defecating in private gardens.
« To protect the dignity and living environment of our citizens, we have decided to bring the curtain down on the 10-year-old festival, » the city’s mayor, Shigeru Horiuchi, said. Local authorities reported that unruly tourists were « opening private home doors without permission to use the restroom, » trespassing, littering and « defecating in private yards and raising a fuss when residents pointed this out ».
Parents and residents also raised concerns over the safety of children using school routes who are being pushed aside by visitors crowding the sidewalks.
