Legendary comedian Billy Crystal and his wife Janice dashed to the home of their close friends Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner to bid farewell, just moments after the couple were tragically killed, according to reports.
Billy and Janice arrived as emergency services were attending to the victims, it is understood. Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were discovered stabbed to death at their £10million Beverly Hills estate.
Their son Nick, 32, has been charged with murder, police confirmed at a press conference yesterday.
The couple’s daughter Romy made the grim discovery and immediately contacted authorities before ringing the Crystals with the devastating news, reports suggest. Images have since surfaced appearing to show Billy, 77, and Janice at the scene whilst first responders worked.
The father-of-two looked visibly distressed, walking arm-in-arm with his wife, his hands covering his face as he seemingly wiped away tears.
Billy ‘tried to say goodbye’
Billy, a three-time Golden Globe nominee, had reportedly wanted to « say goodbye » to his dear friend after receiving Romy’s call, according to TMZ.
Rob was the creative force behind some of cinema’s most beloved films from the 1980s and 1990s, including Stand By Me and The Princess Bride in 1987, the gripping courtroom drama A Few Good Men in 1992, and the romantic hit When Harry Met Sally in 1989, which starred Billy.
Their friendship spanned decades, having first crossed paths on the set of groundbreaking sitcom All In The Family in 1975, where they were cast as close friends. Initially, Rob’s son Nick was set a bail of $4million (£3million), but this has since been rescinded.
Family member’s ‘dangerous’ nature
He is currently detained in Downtown Los Angeles.
Rob and Michele’s daughter, Romy, initially suggested to the police that a family member « should be a suspect » due to their « dangerous » nature.
A heated dispute reportedly erupted between Nick and Rob at a party hosted by an American chat show icon just hours before the director’s tragic demise.
Heartbreaking end to a talented Hollywood director
The bodies of the 78 year old Hollywood actor-director and his 68 year old wife were found at their Brentwood, Los Angeles residence on Sunday.
An LAPD spokesperson confirmed they are probing an « apparent homicide » and are in discussions with family members.
The Oscar-nominated luminary, known for directing iconic films such as Spinal Tap and When Harry Met Sally, along with his wife Michele, reportedly sustained lacerations consistent with knife wounds.
Their daughter discovered them when she dropped by their home for a visit.
