Spring is here, and with the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore some of the beautiful countryside. Living in the UK we are blessed with some truly incredible greenery, and even more stunning wildlife.
There is one region that is home to some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the country, and it makes for the perfect weekend away. This gorgeous region is Yorkshire, where you can see spectacular coastline, deep lush valleys and of course the famous moors. If you want to explore the best of nature, then you need to visit Yorkshire – and Dalby Forest is a great place to start.
Dalby Forest is home to herds of roe deer which roam free through the trees – and much, much more.

Nestled in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest stretches over 8,500 acres of incredible views. There’s also walking and cycling trails, orienteering courses and beautiful sculptures dotted throughout the park.
One of the most famous residents of the forest is the herd of roe deer, which call it home. They roam free throughout the park, and if you want to catch a glimpse of them, it’s best to visit in the early morning or at dusk.
Forestry England recommends staying downwind of the deer so they can’t smell, and moving quietly so they don’t hear you.
If you do spot deer, it’s important to keep a good distance from them and avoid startling them. Use binoculars for a better view, and a long lens if you want to take pictures.
As well as deer, the forest is home to badgers, otters and plenty of birds – perfect for birdwatching. There’s tawny owls, nightjars and woodpeckers dotted throughout the park – make sure to keep a lookout for them.
Dalby Forest is also a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, which means there is very little light pollution and a gorgeous view of the night sky. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye – a truly magical experience.
