Crete has launched a tourism campaign to lure more visitors to its sunny coasts and beautiful beaches. The Greek island is known for it’s beautiful landscapes. In fact, Elafonissi Beach was just named the best beach in the world by Tripadvisor.
But the European island best known for its beach holidays is also home to an array of ancient palaces. However, Crete’s plethora of historical sites and four UNESCO world heritage locations provide ample reason for tourists to book a flight year round. The Palaces of Knossos, Malia, and Zakros are all Bronze Age Minoan palace complexes that offer a singular experience, allowing tourists to glimpse into the lives of the ancient peoples, who influenced the culture of Crete.
Beyond the frescoes and architecture, there are a few unexpected elements that make visiting these palaces worth your while.
Specifically, at the palace of Knossos, known for its Labyrinthe layout, you may be surprised to find the remnants of a fully functioning plumbing system. The palace was fit with clay pipes for drainage, flushing toilets, and running water, in advance of its time.
The Minoans, one of the earliest civilisations, also had designed a system of natural air conditioning. The structure of the palace allowed for natural air conditioning to keep it cool in the hot summer months.
Equally, Knossos, still has its throne room in tact. So you can see the gypsum chair where the kings of Knossos sat.
Other spots worth a visit include the Palace of Malia, considered one of the most important Minoan structures and the Palace of Zakros, Zakros likely served as the Minoan gateway to the Middle East, as evidenced by a number of Middle Eastern artefacts discovered on the site.
Lastly, the Kydonia Palace should be added to your list. Discovered by Greek, Danish, and Swedish archaeologists, the Minoan palace of Kydonia is found in what is now the city of Chania in northwest Crete.
In his statement, the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, said: “Millions of visitors annually say Crete gains a special “place in their hearts and their memories.” He added: “Whatever their plans, whatever season they arrive on our island, this place is full of surprises for everyone. The authenticity of the people, and the uniqueness of the landscape make Crete special.”
