Aryna Sabalenka used her Miami Open victory speech to call out a spectator who bothered her during the third set. While serving at 3-2, a fan shouted “out” in the middle of a rally and was scolded by the umpire. But Sabalenka swore at them in response, receiving a code violation for audible obscenity.

The world No. 1 went on to beat home hope Coco Gauff 6-2 4-6 6-3, successfully defending her Miami Open title and completing the Sunshine Double – winning Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back. And she immediately singled out that fan, also apologising for her language.

“I don’t know where you are… That lady that yelled, that hoped for the ‘out’,” Sabalenka said as she addressed the crowd during her speech. “I shouldn’t be that rude, but come on, you cannot do that, you know? So let’s agree we were both wrong, so sorry.

“And thank you, guys, for an incredible atmosphere, you always bring incredible vibes and a full stadium for our final, thank you so much.”

Sabalenka had also mentioned that fan’s discretion during an immediate post-match interview with Sky Sports. “I got a little frustrated at one moment, definitely not proud of what I yelled! But come on, you cannot do that,” the top seed said.

She was still in great spirits after becoming just the fifth woman to complete the Sunshine Double, and was full of praise for runner-up Gauff, who had previously never been beyond the fourth round in Miami. “You’re so good at speeches, honestly, I don’t know what else to say,” Sabalenka laughed.

“But I want to start with you. You’re a fighter, you also push me so hard to be a better player. I like our rivalry. You’re incredible. I’m happy to see you back in finals, and I really hope we will play many more. So congrats to you and your team, incredible job.”

Addressing her own supporters, the Miami Open champion added: “I want to say thank you to my team. Wow, you guys are growing! It’s like, we’ll need to ask the tournament for a bigger box because you guys are not fitting all in that little space over there!”

“Thank you so much for being with me, for making me a better player, a better person. Thanks for… I don’t know for what! Just for everything. You guys are the best, that’s for sure.”

Sabalenka got engaged ahead of Indian Wells, and her diamond ring has proven to be something of a lucky charm, as she hasn’t lost a match since. So her fiance, Georgios Frangulis, got his own special shoutout. “And thank you to my fiance, sounds good, huh?” she smiled.
