Turkey medical tourism deaths: Need to know as Foreign Office continues to warn Brits
- The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued urgent warnings to Brits travelling to Turkey for medical treatment following seven deaths in 2025.
- The FCDO confirmed it is aware of seven British nationals who have died in Turkey during 2025 after undergoing medical procedures. « Some British nationals have also experienced complications and needed further treatment or surgery following their procedure, » the department added.
- Many Brits travel to Turkey for cosmetic surgery, cardiac procedures and dental work, but the FCDO warns that medical standards can vary widely.
- Those considering medical treatment abroad are urged to consult with their UK doctor beforehand. The FCDO also recommends thorough research, warning that « private companies have a financial interest in booking your treatment and their literature should not be your only source of information ».
- The Turkish Ministry of Health maintains a register of approved medical providers on the HealthTurkiye website.
- The FCDO states it « cannot usually help if you have travelled abroad for medical treatment » as scheduled medical treatment is viewed as a commercial agreement.
