Summer is on its way, and millions of Brits are likely already planning their sunny getaways. If you’re one of them, then there’s no better place for sun and sea than Greece. But with so many islands to choose from, how do you decide where to visit?
By analysing search data, TripAdvisor reviews and geological data, yacht charter company Sunsail has found some of Greece’s hidden gems where you can escape the crowds. One of these islands is Meganisi – a laid back, authentic Greek island packed with charming fishing villages, family run tavernas and stunning underground caves.
The island also has a rich history, perfect for exploring. One of the must sees is Papanikolis cave, one of the largest and most famous sea caves in Greece.
Once used as a hideout by submarines during WWII, this gigantic cave stretches 120 metres long and 60 metres wide. You can take one of the many boat trips and cool off in the crystal clear waters within the cave.
There’s even a hidden beach inside that you can swim to. One TripAdvisor review said: “You cannot realise how huge it is until you actually get in there, then you feel so small… an interesting natural wonder.”
Back on land, Meganisi has plenty to explore. Only 20 square kilometres, it’s small but mighty. Often rejected for its larger neighbour of Lefkada, the island is blissfully unspoilt by overtourism.
Vathi, the largest of the island’s two ports, is a charming traditional fishing village. The village is flanked by two churches that were built to bless all boats entering and leaving the island.
There’s a selection of waterfront tavernas and cafes serving freshly caught seafood. The smaller port, Spilia, is another cute village with fewer tavernas but no less beautiful. A short walk around the bay leads to a longer sandy beach with a further selection of snack bars.
