‘Masterpiece’ Netflix war film with 100% score you’ve probably never heard of | Films | Entertainment

There’s no shortage of war films on Netflix, but every so often one slips under the radar despite earning huge praise. Viewers have described this particular World War 2 drama as a “masterpiece”, and it currently holds a rare 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite that, many people in the UK have probably never heard of it. Released in 2022, the film tells the little-known story of an important battle during the early days of World War 2. It is set in 1940 and follows a young soldier named Gunnar and his wife Ingrid as their small Norwegian town becomes the centre of a fierce clash between German forces and Allied troops.

The film in question is Narvik. Directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg, the Norwegian drama has been praised for its realism and historical accuracy.

Rather than focusing only on large-scale action, it explores the emotional toll of war on families and communities.

But despite all that, Narvik is still considered to be one of the most underrated World War 2 films of recent years.

Many of those who have seen it say that it deserves much more attention.

One person wrote in a review on IMDb: “Narvik is a thrilling, crowd-pleasing war picture. It deserves all the love that All Quiet on the Western Front has gotten and then some.”

Another added: “From the moment I first set eyes on Narvik, I was immediately swept up in a world where every decision feels like a life-or-death dilemma.

« The setting itself holds an almost tangible power. It deserves so much more attention than it gets”

A third wrote: “This is an excellent movie for the genre. It stays true to the actual history of this part of WW2.

« It’s the very best WW2 movie experience my wife and I have had in our many years watching films.”

Someone else commented: “An excellent war film, rooted in strongly drawn characters and an authentic sense of time and place.

« The action sequences are gripping without glamourising violence. I’d even go as far as to call it a masterpiece.”

Several reviews have also pointed to the way the film captures the harsh winter conditions and the difficult moral choices people were forced to make.

At the time of writing, Narvik holds a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It is available to stream on Netflix right now.
