Summer is on its way and if you’re looking for the perfect European holiday, Greece is a safe bet. But with more than 6,000 islands and islets scattered across the country, choosing where to travel can feel impossible. However, yacht charter company Sunsail has analysed reviews and geological data to reveal the best Greek island to visit this year.
Based on this, they ranked each island out of 26 – the higher the score, the more peaceful the island. The island which came top of the list, with a score of 24 was the gorgeous paradise of Lefkada.
This awe-inspiring island is often claimed to be Homer’s Ithaca – home of the hero Odysseus. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world – some packed with sunloungers and tavernas, others wild and untamed. According to TripAdvisor, the best of the best is Porto Katsiki.
This peaceful bay is hemmed in by sweeping white cliffs that contrast beautifully with the crisp blue ocean. At the top of the stairs that lead down to the beach you can buy snacks and drinks, but bring your own sun umbrella as the cliffs offer little in the way of shade.
One visitor, Alberto, wrote on TripAdvisor the beach was “superb”. He said: “The water is wonderful, with simply incredible colors. Like almost all the beaches on the west coast of Lefkada, the water is immediately deep and, despite being milky blue, it is all in all clear.”
He recommended people arrive in the morning however, as boat trips in the afternoon can make the beach crowded.
If you want to really experience what Lefkada has to offer, you need to go on a boat tour. One of the best things about the island is how great of a base it is to see the other tiny islands dotted throughout the warm Ionian Sea around it.
There are so many places to explore but Kastos is a must-see; this tiny island is home to fewer than 100 permanent residents, and feels like a floating village in the middle of the ocean.
With only one small harbour, a cluster of stone houses and a few tavernas, time seems to slow down here. The tavernas that line the harbour serve freshly caught fish and it’s the perfect place to unwind.
