Tiny unspoiled UK village has no tourists and Chris Hemsworth link | UK | Travel

A small Scottish fishing village is about as far away as you can get from the bright lights of Hollywood, but one remote spot has become a must-visit for film fans after it appeared in one of the Marvel films.

Made up of rolling green hills with charming cottages set on the slopes, St. Abbs in Berwickshire leads down to an old harbour area where you can hop on a boat tour to explore the rugged coast. Other than a couple of cafés and a visitors’ centre, there’s really not a huge amount to do in the village itself, but its charm was instantly appealing when it doubled up as ‘New Asgard’ in Avengers: Endgame.

Fans of the film will no doubt find the backdrop familiar, and filming locations include the harbour and surrounding clifftops. Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the franchise, was spotted filming scenes in the region before the film hit cinemas in 2019.

As you enter St Abbs, there’s even a sign proclaiming that the village is ‘Twinned with New Asgard’, showing its willingness to welcome Marvel fans to this remote spot.

But if you’re not a superhero fan, don’t worry, there’s still plenty to enjoy around St Abbs. You can enjoy scuba diving just off the coast in a marine reserve full of incredible underwater creatures. If you prefer to stay on the boat, then take a trip to St Abbs Head, a clifftop covered in wild seabirds including puffin colonies that can be spotted nesting around April to July.

A little further along the coast you’ll discover the ruins of Fast Castle that date back to the 14th-century. Little remains of the fortress, but its position on a sloping cliff makes it a spectacular site to explore and enjoy views across the sea.

South of St Abbs, you’ll find the rugged Horsecastle Bay where from late October to December you’ll often spot adorable seal puppies being looked after by their mothers. Combine the walk with a circular loop of Mire Loch, a manmade lake that’s full of herons and swans, as well as a breeding ground for frogs and toads.

Finish a long walk with a trip to Ebbcarrs Café by the harbour. Here you can enjoy the freshest seafood caught just off the coast as well as other local specials in their classic menu.

The St Abbs Visitor Centre is worth stopping by as it tells the history of the village and is full of unique artefacts from its fishing industry past. If you want to stay in St Abbs for a little longer, it has a handful of holiday homes including the Lighthouse Cottages, right next to the old lighthouse, that offer a tranquil setting with amazing views as you watch the sun set.
