Meghan Markle has reportedly abandoned plans to pen her memoirs – in order to « uphold the standards of the monarchy ».
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, had apparently been presented with numerous lucrative publishing deals to release her book, after the commercial triumph of Prince Harry‘s Spare. She had suggested her desire to follow her husband’s lead last year during a candid podcast.
However, it has now surfaced that Meghan is opting not to proceed with the concept. A source revealed: « Meghan and Harry are cautious about everything they do and say to uphold the standards of the monarchy. Those [memoirs] are the types of projects they don’t want to do. »
While Spare became amongst the fastest-selling non-fiction titles ever, it generated controversy surrounding the royal family, especially regarding Harry’s purported rift with his brother, Prince William.
The most startling sections of the book include accounts of an alleged physical altercation with William, Harry admitting to killing 25 Taliban members in Afghanistan and the duke recounting how he lost his virginity to an older woman in a field. Spare, published in January 2023, intensified tensions amid claims of Prince Harry’s fractured relationship with his family.
However, he and Meghan are now seemingly eager to prevent any additional controversy. Conjecture persists surrounding the couple’s possible return to the fold, with claims connecting them to « half in, half out » arrangements.
« They do the best they can not to upset the royals. Everyone who goes into business with them knows there are constraints, but it hurts the project’s creativity. They are adamant about having creative control and final edit… and what they can’t say limits things, » the source told OK! Magazine.
Recent developments support the insider’s assertions. The Sussexes attended Kris Jenner’s extravagant 70th birthday bash in November last year, but allegedly requested certain photographs to be deleted from Kim Kardashian’s Instagram page.
Sources indicate this represents a shift in strategy by Meghan and Harry, whose revenue streams have diminished since the Netflix deal concluded.
However, Meghan, a mother of two, possesses writing credentials. The source added: « It is the one area where Meghan has a lot of financial clout. » The Duchess of Sussex released children’s book, The Bench, in June 2021, approximately one year after she and her husband departed the UK for the US.
The publication, launched shortly following the birth of Princess Lilibet, quickly joined the esteemed list of The New York Times Bestsellers in the children’s picture book category. Harry subsequently wrote his non-fiction work, which was published less than two years afterwards.
