Kharg Island is strategically important because it is Iran’s main oil export terminal, handling around 90 per cent of the country’s crude oil shipments. Much of Iran’s oil is stored, loaded and exported from the island, making it a vital part of the country’s economy.
Its location in the northern part of the Persian Gulf also gives it major military importance. The island sits close to key shipping lanes linked to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes.
Because of its role in both oil exports and regional security, any attack on Kharg Island can have wider consequences for global energy markets and tensions in the Middle East.
