Donald Trump has sparked fresh fears over his mental state after a Truth Social rant about Iran triggered calls for him to be removed from office. Critics accused the US President of behaving like a « lunatic », while others suggested he had « lost your marbles » after the extraordinary post about Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
The message, which was shared on Truth Social on Easter Sunday, read: « Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F*****n’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP. » The post referred to the effective closure of the vital shipping route between Iran and Oman through which around a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. The waterway has become one of the biggest flashpoints in the current Iran conflict, with disruption sending oil prices soaring worldwide and deepening tensions between Iran, the United States and its allies.
British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan shared the post online and wrote on X: « How is this not 25th Amendment territory??
« Biden said ‘we beat Medicare’ and had to stand down as his party’s presidential candidate.
« Trump rants and raves like this, contradicts himself like a lunatic from one day to the next, and he stays as president? The GOP is ok with this? »
Mail on Sunday commentator Dan Hodges also weighed in, he wrote: « If this is genuine Trump needs to be removed from office quickly.
« He’s clearly having some form of breakdown. »
Broadcaster Piers Morgan also mocked the alleged post, he wrote: « This is embarrassing. Delete it, President – unless you want everyone to think you’ve lost your marbles. »
The 25th Amendment to the US Constitution allows for a president to be removed from office if they are deemed unable to discharge the powers and duties of the role.
The alleged remarks come amid growing speculation over Mr Trump’s wellbeing after social media users circulated unverified claims that he had been taken to Walter Reed Hospital over the Easter weekend.
The White House denied there were any health concerns and said the President was continuing to work.
Communications director Steven Cheung insisted Mr Trump had been « working nonstop » over Easter, while the administration’s rapid response team dismissed the rumours as « insane conspiracy theories ».
Mr Trump has also faced repeated scrutiny over bruising on his hands and previous health issues, including his 2020 hospitalisation with COVID-19.
