You don’t need to travel far out of London in order to get to an idyllic market town that feels like the Cotswolds. If you’re struggling to decide on where to go on a day trip away, there’s a small town you can reach on the Underground that will feel like you’ve travelled much further.
Taking to Instagram, a travel enthusiast couple known as The Weeshas often share their top travel tips for places to explore, whether it’s in the UK or somewhere abroad. The couple have shared clips from their visit to the town.
« This charming town is 50 minutes from London by tube, » they wrote on the video, which showed clips from the idyllic-looking town.
They added in the caption of the post: « Nope, that’s not the Cotswolds. You can visit the English countryside without leaving the London Underground map. »

The video went on to show a courtyard with a clock tower, which was surrounded by a border of blooming flowers. It then cut to a clip of a bridge, where the attached wooden fence had been decorated with more plants and flowers. Also included in the video was a gorgeous fountain, cobblestone streets, timber-framed cottages and a river running through the town.
So, where is this idyllic market town located, and how can you get there?
The couple explained: « Just hop on the Metropolitan Line and in under an hour, you’ll arrive in Amersham, the last stop on the line.
“It’s one of England’s most charming villages, with cobblestone streets, timber-framed cottages, cosy pubs, and rolling Chiltern hills. »
Amersham is a market town and civil parish in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire, England, 27 miles northwest of central London. And you might even recognise it, without ever having set foot here before.
This is because the town is famous for its appearance in popular films and television shows, from Four Weddings and a Funeral to Midsomer Murders and Cuckoo.
Comprising two areas – Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill – the town dates back to pre-Anglo-Saxon times and was even featured in the Domesday Book of 1086.
So what can you do in Amersham that makes it worth a visit? Well, you can simply wander through Old Amersham town and browse boutique shops and antique stores.
If the weather’s nice, you can also have a walk in old Amersham memorial gardens, and visit St Mary’s church, which dates back to around 1140 A.D.
If you’re getting hungry, the travelling couple recommends a bite to eat at The Crown Inn or The King’s Arms, which featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
« This makes for a slow, scenic, and budget-friendly day trip from London, » they wrote in the caption of their post.
To get here, simply take the Metropolitan Line from Baker Street to Amersham Station (Zone 9). A return ticket will cost you around £10.
