Tiger Woods police body cam footage shows reality of arrest and crash | Golf | Sport

American police have published bodycam footage capturing Tiger Woods’ arrest. The golfing icon was charged on suspicion of driving under the influence after being involved in a rollover car crash in Martin County, Florida last Friday.

Woods, 50, has since pleaded not guilty and been granted permission to leave the United States to attend an international rehabilitation facility. The American also released a statement acknowledging the ‘seriousness of the situation’.

The body camera footage, made public by Martin County Sheriff’s Office, captures the moment Woods was detained while his vehicle lay overturned at the roadside. The footage also shows him crouching down and conversing with police officers.

« Looked down at my phone and then all the sudden, boom, » Woods explained. Officers are subsequently seen checking Woods’ back for any signs of injury.

The other motorist caught up in the collision was questioned by officers: « Who hit him? » Gesturing towards Woods, they responded: « He hit me. »

Further footage shows Woods, dressed in a blue polo shirt, apparently dozing off in the rear of a police vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the 50 year old passed a breathalyser test but declined to provide a urine sample and admitted to taking painkillers.

Woods released a statement on Tuesday which read: « I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.

« This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery. I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.

« I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time. »

Woods had been widely regarded as the frontrunner to captain Team USA at next year’s Ryder Cup at Adare Manor Golf Club in Ireland. However, the PGA of America confirmed that in the wake of his arrest, the 15-time major champion has declined the opportunity.

« We commend Tiger for prioritising his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision, » the PGA of America said.

« Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy when appropriate. »
