Travellers who are headed to parts of Spain, or who are already there, have been issued an « extreme risk » weather warning.
The Spanish Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies issued an alert on X, formerly Twitter, relating to Barcelona and Girona. The post, translated from Spanish, explains there is an « extreme risk situation ».
It adds that there will be wind gusts of up to 140 km/hour tomorrow, Sunday, between 5am and 5pm.
The weather alert is in place for Girona Pyrenees and Barcelona Pre-Pyrenees, with people urged to take « maximum caution » and follow these recommendations:
« In the mountains – avoid going up to high and wind-exposed places. Keep in mind that the wind can favour snow accumulation and this increases the risk of avalanches.
« In the city – avoid passing under cornices, trees, scaffolding, cranes, or walls that could come loose. At home – remove any object that could fall or cause an accident [and keep] doors and windows closed.
« If you are driving – moderate your speed and take extreme precautions if driving a larger vehicle or with a trailer, as you have a higher risk of overturning. Be careful with overtaking and maintain a safe distance. »
The alert concluded by asking people to « stay informed through official channels ».
