A YouTuber who visited Europe’s cheapest city has expressed their surprise at the price of one item he paid for on his travels.
Ed Chapman, who posts about his exploits on his channel of the same name, visited the Latvian capital city of Riga and created a video about his time in a city after it was voted one of Europe’s cheapest in a survey by Post Office Travel.
His main reason for being in Riga was to compare it one of the most expensive cities on the European continent, Oslo, Norway. Flights to the city of Riga can be found for a as little as £28 from Leeds Bradford Airport according to Skyscanner.
One of the biggest contrasts between the two, noted Ed, was the price difference between the two hotels he stayed out.

In Oslo he stayed in a three-star hotel for one night and in Riga he was in a four-star hotel, but the price difference was stark.
After walking around and commenting on his hotel room, he explained: “We’re in the heart of the city centre, literally one street away from the main stuff. Four-star hotel. £62 a night. Now that’s tasty. For a capital city, for the middle of the city centre that’s a bit mad isn’t it?
“Bearing in mind in Oslo I stayed in a three-star hotel, also bang in the city centre and that was £140 for a night there. Less than half price that’s crazy.”
Ed isn’t the only individual to have touched on Riga’s beauty. Home to around 600,000 people, the city sits at the heart of the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the Daugava River where said river meets the Baltic Sea.
What’s more, the historical centre of the city is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its Jugendstil and Art Nouveau architecture are two of its highlights.

One of the most notable features of Riga is the Riga Central Market. Originally constructed from reused German Zeppelin hangars, they are some of the most iconic buildings in the city and cover a 778,000 square feet with around 3,000 trade stands.
What’s more, Riga is also within easy reach of local beaches such as Jurmala. The Mirror reported that one person was stunned not only by the price, but by the facilities on offer.
They said in a review: « Changing pods are available on the beach and the sand is soft and flat. We paid €5 each for a sun lounger for the day, although in the afternoon people could help themselves to ones that were left or that people had finished with.
“Well worth the journey from Riga which is about 25 mins by train from central Riga and very cheap. We booked the day before online and it cost us about €6 return for both of us – amazing value.”
