Seven stolen hounds have become unlikely heroes after making a dash for freedom from a Chinese dog meat factory and embarking on a ten mile journey together.
Footage that has gone viral shows the “band of brothers” hot footing it along a busy motorway in Changchun, Jilin province.
The paw-some pack includes an injured German shepherd, Golden Retrievers, Labradors and a Pekingese.
The smallest of the troop, a Corgi, a breed beloved by the late Queen Elizabeth, proved the bravest of them and led the charge, and can be seen looking back to ensure none of his canine chums is left behind.
The incredible moment was captured by chance by a local who said: “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs.”
Volunteers from a local stray dog charity reported all came from the same village and formed strong friendships. All were safely rounded up.
It has been claimed criminals operating a dog meat shop had stolen the animals but they had given them the slip and managed to escape from a truck.
Despite global condemnation, dog meat restaurants still operate in northern China with dishes considered a delicacy providing warmth and sustenance.
For many dog meat shop owners, stray dogs and stolen pets are the easiest and cheapest sources of meat.
