A maniac who launched a frenzied bottle attack on a lone female student in Leeds has admitted attempted murder on the first day of his trial. Ibrahim Albashir, 32, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to the random and unprovoked assault that left his victim with serious cuts to her head and neck.
The attack happened at about 9pm on March 17, 2024 on Headingley High Street, near the Original Oak pub on Otley Road—a busy student area. The woman, in her 30s, was walking home after dinner at a nearby restaurant when Albashir struck without warning or provocation.
He smashed a bottle and launched a savage assault, continuing even as horrified witnesses rushed to help. Only the physical intervention of brave members of the public stopped the frenzy. Prosecutors said that without their quick action, the attack could easily have been fatal.
The Crown Prosecution Service built a strong case using the victim’s testimony, multiple witness statements, medical evidence of her injuries, and CCTV from passing buses that captured Albashir in the moments before the horror unfolded.
An expert medical witness confirmed Albashir was fit to form murderous intent. His actions were “repetitive and deliberate”, and he was fully aware of what he was doing throughout the onslaught.
Albashir initially denied responsibility but faced overwhelming evidence gathered by West Yorkshire Police. He changed his plea as his trial was due to begin, and was immediately remanded in custody. He will be sentenced on 16 June at Leeds Crown Court.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Aamir Sajad, for CPS Yorkshire & Humberside, said: “This was a terrifying and entirely unprovoked attack on a young woman walking home after an evening out. Ibrahim Albashir deliberately targeted her and inflicted serious injuries that could easily have killed her. It is testimony to the bravery of the witnesses who intervened that she is still alive today.
“Albashir initially sought to avoid responsibility for his violent actions, but we were able to work closely with West Yorkshire Police to present clear evidence that he knew exactly what he was doing. I hope today’s outcome brings some comfort to the victim and demonstrates the CPS will always seek to prosecute those who commit violence against women and girls.”
The case has sent shockwaves through Headingley, a popular nightlife spot packed with students and young people. Police described the assault as random, with the victim and attacker complete strangers.
Detectives praised the public who stepped in, saying their courage likely saved a life. Albashir’s guilty plea spares the victim the ordeal of giving evidence at trial, but the physical and psychological scars of the bottle attack will remain.
Sentencing on 16 June is expected to draw a significant term behind bars for what prosecutors called a chilling, motiveless attempt to kill.
