Newcastle can turn to four managers after decision on Eddie Howe future | Football | Sport

Eddie Howe’s time as Newcastle manager might be coming towards the end. The Magpies have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, lost to Barcelona in the Champions League last 16, and face an uphill battle to qualify for Europe next season.

The worst thing about it? Even newly-promoted Sunderland are above the Magpies in the table. And despite being the manager who ended Newcastle’s trophy drought last season, there are reports that PIF have decided to review Howe’s position, with the possibility of bringing in a new boss next season… but who might that be? Express Sport have highlighted four potential candidates.

Perhaps the hottest managerial prospect in the Premier League right now, Andoni Iraola has earned plaudits for his handling of Bournemouth and is being tipped to move on in the near future. While Newcastle would be a step up for the Spanish coach, Iraola may hold out for a club competing in European competition. Regardless, it’s hard to imagine the 43-year-old not featuring on any PIF managerial shortlist, should they move to replace Howe in the summer.

One thing is for certain, and that’s Oliver Glasner won’t be in charge of Crystal Palace next season. The Austrian has already announced his exit from the club, with clubs already linked to the 2025 FA Cup-winning coach. Manchester United are among those, which could prove tough competition for Newcastle, but it’s easy to see how and where Glasner would fit in at St. James’ Park.

Another manager currently plying their trade in the Premier League, Marco Silva has been at Fulham for the last five years, and has helped stabilise them in the top flight. There are suggestions that the Portuguese tactician might’ve taken Fulham as far as he can, with tentative talk that an exit might be on the cards. Perhaps now is the best time for the 48-year-old to make that step up.

While Roberto De Zerbi is no longer managing in the Premier League, he certainly has plenty of experience, having guided Brighton to Europa League qualification during his stint in charge on the south coast. A recent departure from Marseille means De Zerbi isn’t tied down to a club as things stand, which would make negotiations to bring him in much easier (and most likely cheaper). Known for his fiery side, Newcastle could represent the perfect place for De Zerbi to make his return to English football.
