It’s only been a decade since Disney released their CG-animated princess musical, Moana. Since then, the Polynesian mythic epic has gone down a storm on Disney+. So much so, in fact, that the animated Moana 2 made over $1 billion at the box office. And now a live-action remake (or “reimagining” as Disney put it) is heading to the big screen this summer. Why so soon? Given Dwayne Johnson is reprising his demigod Maui in live action, it could be before he ages out of the role, given he’s already 53. Seeing the first look at him in costume, he’s certainly still got it and no doubt Disney will be betting on another $1 billion movie.
The film’s official synopsis read: “In Moana, Disney’s live action reimagining of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
Moana hits cinemas on July 10, 2026.
