Pep Guardiola maintains that Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp represents the greatest test of his managerial career despite Real Madrid eliminating Manchester City from the Champions League for a third consecutive campaign. Madrid defeated Man City 5-1 on aggregate in this year’s round of 16, almost exactly 13 months after triumphing 6-3 across two legs during last term’s knockout phase play-offs, having previously progressed via a penalty shootout two years prior.
The two sides have met in five straight seasons, and Man City’s sole triumph arrived in 2023, when they secured their maiden Champions League trophy. That 5-1 aggregate victory came barely 12 months after a 6-5 defeat that denied them the opportunity to face Klopp’s Reds in Paris.
Guardiola has faced Madrid more often than any other opponent in the Champions League with Man City, 13 times in total. Klopp’s Liverpool, nevertheless, are still regarded as the tougher proposition.
When questioned by a Spanish journalist whether the fixtures with Madrid have been the greatest test of his career, Guardiola responded: « No. » He continued, as translated from Spanish into English during the post-match press conference: « Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool was my biggest challenge, you almost don’t realise what it was like to face Liverpool. »
Klopp speaks equally warmly of Guardiola. He recorded a video message before the Catalan manager reached 1,000 matches.
